Growing Somalia’s Gig Economy

Somalia has struggled with social and military conflict for over two decades. Two generations of youth have been mostly left behind in vulnerable situations, with few employment opportunities, and socio-economic conclusion.

At the same time, the globalized digital gig economy presents vast opportunities for Somalia’s youth: With the right mindset, trainings, and access to international markets, Somalia’s youth can be empowered to secure adequate incomes, support their families, and even become tech entrepreneurs.

The DS4Jobs by SIMAD iLab from Mogadishu´s prestigious SIMAD University helps to make this vision a reality. Through its digital skills training program, it supports tech entrepreneurs to offer their services on international freelance platforms such as Upwork or Fiverr.

Based on a smart ecosystem building approach, the organizers make sure to secure long-term positive impact.
