The Rhodes Co-Lab

Effectively managing a destination is crucial for its long-term sustainability. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders can amplify the impact of even minor changes. In January 2022, TUI Group, TUI Care Foundation, and the Government of the Southern Aegean Region announced a partnership aimed at transforming Rhodes into a global exemplar of sustainable holiday destinations.

The inception of The Rhodes Co-Lab marks the initiation of a sustainability revolution with implications extending beyond Greece. It represents the pioneering endeavor where a prominent destination of such scale is proactively addressing sustainability challenges. The Rhodes Co-Lab will engage with local tourism entities and international collaborators to devise and execute tangible solutions tailored to Rhodes. Moreover, a dedicated think tank will convene international experts on the island.

Given its stature as a premier global destination, Rhodes serves as an ideal testing ground for innovations in sustainable tourism. The island encapsulates all facets of a holiday experience within its confines, from accommodations and transportation to excursions, thereby showcasing the multifaceted challenges inherent in sustainability efforts.

Over the next five years, TUI Group, TUI Care Foundation, and Rhodes have outlined key focus areas for collaboration with partners. Their objectives center on fostering sustainable growth that preserves resources while enhancing local participation, such as through job creation. Biodiversity preservation and environmental conservation are integral components of destination management. Efforts will also prioritize educational initiatives to empower local communities and promote cultural heritage alongside tourism. Novel strategies for energy, water, and waste management aim to significantly reduce the ecological footprint of tourism on the island. Additionally, the Co-Lab will spearhead advancements in modern mobility concepts to further enhance sustainability efforts on Rhodes.
