Algae Biotechnology in Saxony-Anhalt

The Evolution of Algae Biotechnology

Algae biotechnology has rapidly evolved in Saxony-Anhalt, becoming a cornerstone of the region’s transition to a bio-based economy. With local universities and research institutions firmly established in algae research, the industrial value chain from production to processing to end products is thriving, driven by high economic interest. Notably, the region boasts one of Europe’s largest algae farms, alongside pilot plants at Anhalt University and the Fraunhofer Research Institute for sustainable algae biomass production.

Through a strong network of stakeholders along the value chain, including companies, research institutions, and universities, Saxony-Anhalt has fostered collaboration and innovation in algae biotechnology. Initiatives like the Central German Algae Stammtisch and the ZIM Innovation Network Microalgae further facilitate networking and knowledge exchange, positioning the region as a leader in algae-based solutions for the industrial bioeconomy.
